As a kid, she always believed she’d become bilingual
In Texas, Abbie grew up listening to her Mexican grandmother speak in Spanglish and went on many family trips to Mexico. In her hometown of Houston, Abbie was exposed to many Spanish-speaking cultures. As a child, she knew she would become bilingual. Now she understands what a gift it was to start her language-learning journey when she was young.
In college, Abbie spent a year abroad in Mexico, taking classes to complete her degree for two semesters at the University of Guanajuato. Her senior year, she taught non-credit Spanish courses at Southern Oregon University. She then returned to Texas to start her teaching career as a Spanish teacher and grant program coordinator. For years, she had extensive training in teaching Spanish to children, and even presented workshops at foreign language conferences. She has traveled to Peru, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, and lived in Spain to take courses in teaching Spanish as a second language.
Since that time, Abbie has lived in Tahoe and taught Spanish immersion to preschool and kindergarten students, after school classes to children, and adult Spanish classes for all levels in Truckee. She also had the privilege of teaching Spanish at the lower school at Sage Ridge School in Reno. Abbie currently teaches TK at Donner Trail Elementary, where she incorporates some Spanish into her teaching.
As a child, Abbie loved her interactive Spanish classes the most. Now, she creates engaging lessons that incorporate movement, fun, interaction, games, and immersion so her students can learn naturally. Abbie is excited to bring Spanish classes to Tahoe’s young Spanish learners.
